Where to Eat Now

The restaurant is gone. The people are not — and neither is the kind of cooking it did.

Check before you travel

Vespaio Ristorante and Chapulín Cantina both closed permanently on 28 February 2026. The recommendations below are independent and unpaid — nobody on this list has been asked for or has given anything in return. Restaurants change, so confirm hours before making a trip.

The question this site gets asked most is some version of "so where do I go instead?". The honest answer is that no single restaurant replaces a twenty-seven-year-old dining room. But if you break down what people actually miss — the pasta, the oven, the butchery, the bar seat, the room itself — each of those has somewhere worth going.

The direct line

Restaurants from the same people

If what you want is the Vespaio kitchen rather than the Vespaio room, these are the closest thing that exists.

Vespa Rossa

Dripping Springs, TX · Italian

Opened by Daniel Brooks and Ryan Samson in the summer of 2025, the name means 'red wasp' — a deliberate nod to the original. The format is deliberately more casual: pizza, salads and pasta rather than white tablecloths. It stayed open after the South Congress closures and is the most direct continuation of the Vespaio kitchen. Dripping Springs is roughly a 40-minute drive west of downtown Austin.

Licha's Cantina

East Austin · Mexican

Daniel Brooks's East Austin restaurant, which he ran throughout his time at Vespaio. Interior-Mexican cooking in a converted house on East 6th, with a garden patio. Different cuisine entirely, but the same instincts about hospitality and scratch cooking.

On the same street

If you came to South Congress for dinner

These are the places within a short walk of 1610 that a Vespaio regular would have sent you to on a night the dining room was full.

Güero's Taco Bar

1412 S. Congress Ave

The only restaurant on the avenue with a longer tenure than Vespaio's. A converted lumberyard, a huge patio, and a Tex-Mex menu that has barely flinched in decades. Reliable rather than fashionable, which is the point.

Home Slice Pizza

1415 S. Congress Ave

New York-style slices and whole pies, usually with a queue. If you were coming for the wood-fired pizza specifically, this is the closest substitute on the block.

Perla's Seafood & Oyster Bar

1400 S. Congress Ave

The white-tablecloth-with-a-patio option on the avenue. Oysters, whole fish, and the front porch that makes it one of the better places on the street to eat outdoors.

June's All Day

1722 S. Congress Ave

A wine-forward all-day café a couple of doors south. Strong by-the-glass list and an easy place to sit with a plate of something simple — useful if what you miss is the bar seat rather than the dining room.

Elsewhere in Austin

For handmade pasta and whole-animal cooking

Two things Vespaio did better than almost anyone in town: fresh pasta and nose-to-tail butchery. Both have successors, some of them staffed by people who trained in that kitchen.

Dai Due

Manor Rd · Butcher shop & restaurant

Founded by Jesse Griffiths, a former Vespaio cook. Whole-animal butchery, Texas ingredients and wood-fired cooking taken about as far as anyone in the state takes it. The most direct philosophical descendant of the Vespaio kitchen.

Micklethwait Craft Meats

Rosewood Ave · Barbecue

Another restaurant with Vespaio DNA in its origins. Not Italian in any respect, but the same instinct about doing the butchery and the curing yourself.

L'Oca d'Oro

Mueller · Italian

House-made pasta, a seasonal menu that changes constantly, and a genuine commitment to how the restaurant treats its staff. The closest thing in Austin to the Vespaio proposition in a modern room.

Bufalina

East Cesar Chavez · Neapolitan pizza

If it was the oven you came for. Wood-fired Neapolitan pizza and a short, seriously chosen natural wine list.
